Google has reportedly agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit, facing allegations of secretly tracking internet use during private browsing modes. The plaintiffs sought at least $5 billion, claiming Google's analytics, cookies, and apps allowed tracking even in "Incognito" mode. The class action, initiated in 2020, accused Google of operating a "pervasive data tracking business," gathering extensive user information without consent. Despite Google's assurances of user control, plaintiffs argued that the tech giant tracked browsing history and web activity through services like Google Analytics and Google Ad Manager. The preliminary settlement was reached, postponing the scheduled February 5, 2024 trial. While settlement terms remain undisclosed, a formal agreement is expected by February 24, 2024. This development follows a previous lawsuit against Google for alleged unauthorized data use and copyright violations in AI development.
