China dominates the generative AI patent race, with 38,210 patents from 2014 to 2023, overtaking the United States (6,276). Tencent, Ping An Insurance, and Baidu are among of China's most successful inventors. The United Nations study shows a considerable increase in patenting due to technological breakthroughs in GenAI. China's plans seek to boost its position in AI development and use.
