The meteoric rise of AI in the last few years has caused a huge demand for data on which to train its large language models. That load has fallen heavily on Wikipedia, the world’s largest repository of human knowledge. But with the proliferation of AI tools there’s a disconnect now between where people are getting their information from. Wikipedia's executives tell us that potential separation could jeopardize an entire generation of volunteer editors' engagement with Wikipedia.
